Sure, the PGA TOUR season “ends” in August, but that doesn’t mean golf season slows down in the fall! We’ve got a ton of tournament news in this week’s newsletter with a few other local golf nuggets sprinkled in, so catch up on this week’s featured stories below and enjoy an awesome weekend of fall weather in the Carolinas!

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINE

Carmel Country Club cruised to victory in the annual 4-way match between some of the city’s most prestigious clubs. The Carmel team built a strong lead during the opening round at Quail Hollow and backed it up with an even better performance on their home course last Saturday.

The Interclub Championship is contested each year between these 4 teams and features a unique format. Teams are comprised of 11 Mid-Ams, 8 Seniors, and a club professional from each course. Contestants participate in 2 rounds of four-ball stroke play, with the top 7 scores (4 Mid-Am, 2 Senior, 1 additional) comprising each team’s daily total.

The victory for Carmel came as no surprise to many competitors, as the South Charlotte club has dominated the event in recent history. The format, which rewards depth, has been a great fit for Carmel, a club known for its large membership and long list of strong players. See full tournament results below.

The Twilight Golf Club tournament calendar culminates each fall with the Club Championship at Holly Ridge Golf Links. This 27-hole event starts with a series of flighted 9-hole matches before flight winners square off in a 3-hole aggregate playoff for all the marbles.

Defending champion Andrew Furr and 63 other members are set to compete for the title on October 15th. We can’t wait for another amazing day of fall golf!

COURSES

I don’t know about you, but with the barrage of Candyroot media in recent months, I’ve found myself forgetting about Broomsedge! The course, which could just be a victim of the speed of the modern media cycle, feels like it’s been around forever. In fact, the club only just wrapped up an extended period of “preview play” and recently hosted a media day as the course prepares for its next chapter.

Back in March, Fried Egg Golf helped break the news of new ownership at Broomsedge and a transition to a “welcoming private club” model that will usher in additional hospitality offerings and visitor access in the coming years. The new ownership group is led by Baker Thompson and Michael Keiser, Jr., the team behind the wildly successful Sand Valley in Wisconsin.

The recent media day was hosted by KemperSports, who took over management of Broomsedge earlier this year. The event was informal - golf and dinner - and allowed local media and content creators to see the fully grown-in golf course and hear from club leadership about where things are going next.

Cottages, restaurants, and potentially a second golf course are all part of the long-term roadmap, but the most notable detail is ownerships commitment to maintaining its “UK-style” access model. Broomsedge has set out from the beginning to be different from most of the other modern, high-end private clubs developed in the U.S., and the commitment to accessibility that was one of the club’s founding hallmarks seems to be in good hands as the new era begins.

Raleigh’s Will Minton captured the 2026 North Carolina Mid-Amateur title last weekend at North Ridge Country Club after a 3-hole playoff with Charlotte’s Sam Jenkins. Minton, a Raleigh local who calls CCNC in Pinehurst his home club, opened with rounds of 67-65 to take the 36-hold lead. During Friday’s round, he played an 11-hole stretch in -9, shooting 30 on his closing 9 to grab a 1-shot lead entering the final day.

Jenkins, who finished 3rd at the Charlotte City Amateur back in August, was also in the mix all weekend after opening with a bogey-free 64 (-8) and backing it up with a 69 (-3). The low opening round came as a surprise to Jenkins, who had been on a fly-fishing trip in the leadup to the event and hadn’t played golf in almost 2 weeks. Upon arriving at the driving range to knock off some rust the day before, he proceeded to lock his keys and clubs in his car, derailing his prep and delaying his arrival in Raleigh.

Come the back 9 on Saturday, Minton, Jenkins, and defending champion Cyrus Stewart were all locked in a tight contest. Stewart fell away with a late double, while Minton maintained a 1-shot advantage as the final group approached the 18th hole. Minton ended up making bogey at the last, leaving Jenkins with a ~10-foot birdie putt to win the championship. His putt slid just over the edge, which set up a sudden-death playoff. On the third playoff hole, Minton hit his approach shot within a foot and tapped in for birdie. Jenkins still had 20 feet to match, but his putt slid just over the edge.

Contestants had great things to say about North Ridge Country Club, a 36-hole facility that one player called the “Carmel Country Club of Raleigh” due to its multiple courses and upscale amenities. The Lakes Course ended up presenting a great mix of challenging and scorable holes, while the course’s bermuda greens were in great condition and rolled at a nice holing speed.

Stewart Hagestad Wins Crump Cup: 2-time Charlotte City Am champion Chad Wilfong made match play at the Crump Cup at Pine Valley last weekend but was ousted in the Round of 32 by the eventual champion.

Bridgeman Wins in Asheville with Sunday 61: Spartanburg’s Jacob Bridgeman won the inaugural Biltmore Championship Asheville and will make his Presidents Cup debut today in Chicago! Fun viewing despite the super low scores - love having another local PGA TOUR event.

U.S. Mid-Amateur Begins Tomorrow: 4 Charlotteans are competing at this year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur at Sand Valley. Shoutout to subscribers Paul Huber and John Eades - go low fellas!
