City Am Day 2: McGlone's Moving Day Magic

Welcome to the Two Down Press golf newsletter!

The stage is set for a great final round after a memorable Moving Day at Myers Park Country Club. It’s tight at the top, with 5+ players still legitimately in the mix to lift the Charlotte City Amateur trophy. The leaders are off at 10:30 at Quail Hollow Club, so if you’re trying to catch the final few holes live, the lead groups should be rounding the Green Mile between 2:30 and 3:30 Sunday afternoon. Enjoy our Day 2 recap below, and we’ll be back next week with a full wrap-up of the 2025 City Am!

Round of the Day Propels McGlone to 36-Hole Lead

Looking back down the 18th at Myers Park Country Club

Former Cedarwood Club Champion Jake McGlone made 7 birdies on his way to a Saturday 65 (-6) (view full leaderboard). After closing the first round at Raintree with 4 consecutive birdies, he made 4 more on the front 9 at Myers Park to go out in 32. A bogey at the par 3 15th threatened to derail his charge, but he rebounded to play the final 3 holes in -2 and capped off the performance with a long-range sand save at the difficult 18th. McGlone’s score of 65 was 3 shots better than the next best round on the day - an impressive performance on a MPCC layout featuring lightning fast greens, difficult pin positions, and a par 4 finisher playing close to 500 yards.

Several other strong contenders are nipping at McGlone’s (-7) heals heading into the final day at Quail Hollow. Jason Hnat, the only player to post 2 rounds in the 60s, sits one shot back at -6, while round 1 leader Matt Kilgo and defending champion Pearse Lucas finished at -5. Paul Fitzgerald rounds out the top 5, as a tidy 69 in round 2 saw him jump up the leaderboard to -3.

At the other end of the board, the Day 2 cut fell at +4, with the top 24 players advancing to Sunday’s final round. It’s a big accomplishment to play all 3 rounds at the City Am, as it earns an exemption into next year’s championship - congrats to all who made it through!

Don’t ask me my pick (we saw how that went last time), but I can confidently say that it’s still all to play for at Quail. As we see every year on the PGA Tour, the course makes for a fun finish, with a back 9 composed of challenging stretches, birdie opportunities, and a closing trio that typically play as 3 of the most difficult holes.
