Carolinas Mid-Am Preview: What to Expect this Weekend at Broomsedge

Let’s face it - not every high-level golf tournament is held on a high-level course. At the professional level, modern hitting distances and tournament infrastructure needs prevent the PGA TOUR from visiting many top courses, while Amateur event scheduling is often scuppered by member play and club politics at would-be venues. This is why we’ve had our eyes on the 2026 Carolinas Mid-Am, where 132 of the best players in our region will do battle with one of the best new courses in the country.
Here is a full breakdown of what to expect at this weekend’s championship at Broomsedge Golf Club, including intel from players in the field and links to all the latest updates.
Conditions: We’ve had an incredible stretch of weather in the lead-up to the championship. A warm and dry April has the bermuda looking quite green, and the general lack of precipitation should mean firm course conditions throughout. Broomsedge is a course designed for firm, bouncy conditions, which allow the property’s slopes and undulations to come to life.
Wind is a constant factor at Broomsedge, but there doesn’t appear to be much in the weekend forecast. Players have very little protection in the form of trees and will feel every gust across the wide-open property, but the wind forecast for rounds 1 and 2 tops out at 10 MPH.
One notable report we received from the ground is that the native areas are very playable. The long grasses that separate many holes at Broomsedge are yet to reach their mid-summer heights, making recovery from areas off the fairway much more feasible.

Course setup: Contestants have reported firm greens running around 10 on the stimpmeter. This may seem low for high-level tournament standards, but the severity of the slopes dictates a more modest speed to allow for interesting pin positions. The putting surfaces will receive a cut and roll prior to Thursday’s opening round.
Speaking of pin locations, it does sounds like this will be the course’s biggest defense against what is a very accomplished field. According to some practice round scouting, it appears the week’s hole locations will be a good mix of inviting and challenging. Players will be forced to be extremely disciplined and thoughtful about where they leave approach shots.
The published yardage per the CGA is 6,807, but multiple players reported surprise at where the tee boxes were marked in the practice round. Most holes are expected to be played from a “1-up” tee box, which will mean short irons and wedges for the field into many holes. While they will have scoring clubs in their hands, the pin locations will ultimately decide where the true scoring opportunities lie. Big hitters should have an advantage given the course’s width, but longer tee shots do often have to navigate fairway bunkers and narrowing landing areas.
Featured groups: It’s always a risk to call out specific groups with a bunch of 2DP subscribers in the field, but I’ll name 2 pairings that stand out! Tons of other names, including defending champion Brett McLamb and many of Charlotte’s best players, that we’re excited to track this weekend.
1:14 PM (off 10): Jon Weiss Jr., David Yowell, Cody Sundberg - Weiss Jr. and Broomsedge founder Sundberg won the Carolinas Invitational last fall. They are paired with David Yowell, who is the current club champion at Carolina Golf Club.
1:47 PM (off 1): Chandler Mulkey, John Eades, Nic Brown - Super accomplished trio here with the 2025 Carolinas Amateur champion Chandler Mulkey, multiple-time Charlotte City Am champion and friend-of-the-program John Eades, and multiple-time CGA champion Nic Brown.

LOCAL BEAT
Truist Championship Media Day Takes Place at Ballantyne Resort

With the Masters officially in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking forward to our local Signature Event at Quail Hollow. The 2026 edition will be the first iteration hosted in Charlotte under new title sponsor Truist, after the 2025 tournament was temporarily moved to Philadelphia Cricket Club to accommodate the PGA Championship.
The team at Axios Charlotte was onsite for Media Day earlier this week and put together a nice summary of what to expect at this year’s tournament. Expect updated branding, and new trophy, and a few other wrinkles, but a generally similar look-and-feel for veteran attendees of the Wells Fargo Championship.
Tickets start at $54 for Wednesday’s practice round and rise to $91 for Sunday. Admission is free for 2 kids up to 15 years old attending with a ticketed adult! Grab your family and get out to watch some high-level golf here in a few weeks.
STORIES TO TRACK
Spring Issue of Carolinas Golf Magazine Now Available: The Masters-themed edition contains a fun collection of stories all tied to the season’s first major. Great writing and beautiful photography as has become typical under the guidance of new Editor-in-Chief Josh Stueve.
